Best carpet for stairs: durability, safety and style
Stairs take more punishment than any other floor in the house, so the carpet you choose matters more here than anywhere else. Here is how we guide customers across London, Essex, the M4 corridor and South Wales when it comes to carpeting stairs and landings.
Choose a hard-wearing fibre
Polypropylene and nylon, or wool-rich blends, handle heavy foot traffic best. An 80/20 wool blend is the sweet spot of comfort and durability for most homes, while 100% polypropylene is the toughest budget option.
Twist pile beats loop on stairs
A twist pile hides wear and footmarks and copes with bending over each step. Loop piles such as Berber can snag and “grin” (show their backing) on the stair nosing, so they are best avoided on stairs.
Weight and density matter
A heavier, denser carpet wears far better on stairs. This is the one place not to skimp, even if you choose a budget carpet elsewhere in the house.
Underlay and fitting matter as much as the carpet
A good PU underlay adds comfort and life. On stairs, proper fitting around the nosing is what separates a job that lasts from one that bags within a year. Our own trained team fits every stair by hand — no subcontractors.
Safety underfoot
A firmly fitted carpet with the right underlay improves grip on the stairs, which matters for young children and older residents alike.
Stair carpet questions
Wool or synthetic for stairs? A wool blend for comfort and looks; 100% polypropylene for the toughest, most budget-friendly option.
Can you carpet just the stairs and landing? Yes — it is one of our most common jobs, and we can match it to existing flooring.
How long does a stair carpet take to fit? A typical staircase and landing is usually done within a day.
