Floor Levelling & Subfloor Preparation

Subfloor service

Floor levelling & subfloor preparation

A floor is only as good as what’s underneath it. Ben levels and prepares subfloors — latex self-levelling screed, plywood overlay and damp checks — so your new floor lays flat and lasts.

The step that makes a floor last

Most flooring problems — dips, hollows, lifting, creaking — come from a poor subfloor, not the floor itself. Hard floors like LVT, herringbone and cork are especially unforgiving of an uneven base.

Ben assesses the subfloor honestly and prepares it properly: self-levelling latex for dips and old adhesive, a plywood or hardboard overlay where needed, and moisture checks before anything is laid. It is included as standard with our fitting, or available as a standalone service.

What’s involved

Latex

Self-levelling latex

A liquid screed that flows into dips and sets hard and flat — the usual fix for uneven concrete or old adhesive.

Ply

Plywood overlay

A ply or hardboard overlay to create a smooth, stable base over timber subfloors.

Damp

Moisture & damp checks

Checking for damp before fitting, so moisture doesn’t ruin a new floor.

Prep

Uplift & clean-up

Lifting old flooring and adhesive and leaving a clean, sound base ready to fit.

Floor levelling questions

Do I need my floor levelled?

Not always — it depends on the state of the subfloor and the floor going down. Ben checks at the home visit and only recommends it where it is needed.

Is subfloor prep included in your fitting quote?

Yes, standard preparation is included. Significant levelling (e.g. large areas of latex) is itemised so you can see exactly what you’re paying for.

How long does latex levelling take to dry?

Most self-levelling compounds are walk-on within hours and ready to floor over the same or next day, depending on depth and conditions.

Can you level a floor for underfloor heating?

Yes — levelling is common over underfloor heating to encase the system and give a flat base for the floor.
