The best flooring for pets
If you’ve got pets, your flooring has to cope with claws, the odd accident, muddy paws and shed hair — while still being comfortable for the animals and easy for you to keep clean. Some floors handle this brilliantly; others scratch, stain or get slippery. Here’s how the main options stack up.
Ben fits all of these across London, Essex, the M4 corridor and South Wales, and is happy to advise on the best choice for your home and pets on a free visit.
Best options for pet owners
Luxury vinyl (LVT)
Our top pick — scratch- and water-resistant, warm, easy to wipe and good grip for paws.
Water-resistant laminate
Tough and scratch-resistant; choose a textured, water-resistant range and it copes well.
Stain-resistant carpet
Twist and polypropylene carpets resist stains and are cosy — just avoid loop piles claws can snag.
Engineered wood
Real wood with a tough finish — lovely, though big dogs’ claws can mark softer woods.
What to avoid (and why)
- Soft solid woods — they scratch and dent more easily under claws.
- Loop-pile carpet — claws can catch and pull the loops.
- High-gloss finishes — they show scratches and can be slippery for dogs.
- Anything not water-resistant in rooms where accidents might happen.
Pet flooring questions
What is the best flooring for dogs?
LVT is usually best for dogs — scratch- and water-resistant, warm, easy to clean and with enough grip for paws. Water-resistant laminate is a good budget alternative.
Is laminate or LVT better for pets?
Both are good. LVT is warmer, quieter and more water-resistant; laminate is cheaper. For pets we lean towards LVT, or a textured water-resistant laminate.
Is carpet ok with pets?
Yes — choose a stain-resistant twist or polypropylene carpet and avoid loop piles that claws can snag. It’s cosy and easy to spot-clean.
What flooring won’t scratch?
No floor is fully scratch-proof, but LVT and good water-resistant laminate resist claw marks far better than soft solid wood or high-gloss finishes.
