Best flooring for underfloor heating (2026)
Underfloor heating (UFH) is now standard in extensions and new builds across London, Essex, the M4 corridor and South Wales — but not every floor copes well with the heat cycle. The wrong choice can gap, cup, or simply insulate the warmth away. Here is what actually works, from a team that fits over UFH every week.
The short answer: engineered wood, LVT and most modern laminates are all UFH-compatible. Solid hardwood and thick wool carpet with a dense underlay generally are not.
Engineered wood — the premium choice
A real-wood top layer on a stable plywood core, engineered wood handles the expansion and contraction of underfloor heating far better than solid timber. Choose boards rated for UFH, keep the surface temperature within the maker’s limit (usually around 27°C), and it looks superb in open-plan rooms.
LVT (luxury vinyl tile) — the practical all-rounder
LVT conducts heat quickly and efficiently, warms up fast, and is fully water-resistant — ideal for kitchens and bathrooms with UFH. Use a thin, high-conductivity underlay or a glue-down fit so you don’t insulate the heat away.
Laminate — budget-friendly, with caveats
Most quality laminates are UFH-rated. The key is to keep the combined tog rating of the board plus underlay low (ideally under 1.0 tog) so the heat passes through efficiently.
What to avoid over underfloor heating
Solid hardwood moves too much with the heat cycle, and carpet with a thick, dense underlay insulates the warmth and fights the system. A low-tog carpet is sometimes possible in bedrooms — ask us at the home visit.
Underfloor heating questions
What is the maximum temperature for wood over UFH? Usually around 27°C surface temperature; we set this with you and the flooring manufacturer’s guidance.
Does LVT or engineered wood heat up faster? LVT, because it is thinner and conducts heat well, so the room warms quicker.
Can I have carpet over underfloor heating? Sometimes, with a low-tog carpet and thin underlay, but it is the least efficient option. We will advise honestly for your room.
